The EFQM excellence model in Spanish healthcare: a systematic review

Introduction: Quality management systems are widely used to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services. The objective of this study is to have the most current evidence in relation to EFQM interventions in Spanish healthcare.
Material and method: The recommendations to improve the publication of systematic reviews were followed: PRISMA. The bibliographic search was carried out in Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), SCOPUS, Scielo, MedLine / PubMed, Cochrane databases and in the Google Scholar search engine, with free and controlled language, using the MeSh search terms: “Total Quality Management” AND “Spain”. 7 selected articles were analyzed. The articles were selected based on their relevance, published in peer-reviewed academic journals and published between 2010 and 2024.
Results: The most important discussion topics extracted in the analyzed articles refer to the safety of the health center and the patient, employee satisfaction, and the strengths and areas of improvement in a complete cycle of self-assessment and its axes. transversal with the EFQM excellence model of healthcare organizations.
Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate the need to apply the EFQM model, focusing above all on quality of care and patient safety. In this way, it could be considered a useful tool as a quality management model, since it allows self-assessment and identifies the strengths and areas for improvement of healthcare organizations.
