Introduction: To establish Metabolic Syndrome (MS) prevalence in employees belonging to the workforce of 3 Euskadi´s Basque Country Hospitals, and the respective association with risk factors and predictive indicators.
Method: Population-based, observational and cross-sectional study with a quantitative and correlational-descriptive focus. Population size was determined by a simple random sampling without replacement, making the estimation of population parameters (approximated estimated value to 0.5, accuracy of range 0.05 and confidence level of 0.95), with a 15% loss adjustment after reviewing 452 health evaluations reports in each hospital. The outcome variables were those recommended by the World Health Organization.
Results: Metabolic Syndrome prevalence of 5.5% with no significant trend (R2=0.11 p=0.528). Association between MS, smoking and alcohol consumption in women (p<0,001 in both cases). In men it was correlated with physical exercise (p=0.001) and work shift (p=0.043). Quantitative variables: age, body mass index, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), blood glucose and cholesterol were associated with MS (p<0.001).
Conclusions: The observed prevalence was substantially lower than the data reflected in previous studies, both in the general population and in workers. Variations in the studied period were not significant. Association was found and confirmed in MS: smoking and alcohol consumption in women and physical exercise and work shift in males. All of the quantitative variables showed association.
