Abstract

Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a priority Public Health problem in Spain and constitute a health care quality indicator. HAIs surveillance helps to understand the epidemiology of these infections in order to guide the implementation of appropriate prevention and control programs.

Methods: we have analysed individualized patient data from the 2022point prevalence survey (EP-2022), provided by the national coordination of EPINE (Point Prevalence Study of Nosocomial Infections in Spain) of the Spanish Society of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Health Management (SEMPSPGS), as part of the agreements established with the Ministry of Health. The prevalence of patients with at least one HAI and the prevalence of patients receiving at least one antimicrobial and the associations between patient risk factors and hospital characteristics and HAI were studied.

Results: The prevalence of patients with at least one HAI was 8.2% and prevalence of patients receiving at least one antimicrobial was 46.4%. Male patients, with 61-75 years old, with hypoalbuminemia, pressure sores, coma, surgery, urinary catheter or intubated, with a McCabe category of “ultimately or rapidly fatal disease”, admitted to hospitals with 650 beds or more or in long term care hospitals, presented higher HAI prevalence.

Conclusions: EP-2022 has allowed to know the epidemiology of HAIs in Spanish hospitals and to identify patients with potential risk factors where to maximize infection prevention efforts.
