The Andes hantavirus (ANDV) outbreak linked to a transatlantic cruise ship in May 2026 represented an unusual public health event. A total of 13 cases were reported across several countries, including two in Spain, with three deaths. Evidence suggests initial exposure in Argentina followed by limited person-to-person transmission during the voyage. In Spain, 16 high-risk contacts were monitored, two of whom developed infection. The risk of transmission was considered very low due to the absence of animal reservoirs and the rapid implementation of control measures. This event highlights the importance of surveillance and international coordination in emerging infectious diseases.
