Abstract

Introduction: Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonosis that has had a significant impact on Mediterranean countries. In Spain, the implementation of livestock sanitation programs has led to a drastic reduction in the number of human cases and the achievement of the disease-free status in susceptible livestock species. In this context, epidemiological surveillance of any human case is crucial and should serve to identify potential residual sources of infection that may indicate changes in the epidemiological situation.

Method: Descriptive epidemiological analysis of confirmed native cases of brucellosis, reported to the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE) over the last decade, with particular emphasis since 2021, the year the European Commission declared Spain free of brucellosis (sheep and goats) and bovine file was submitted.

Results: From 2014 to 2023, 335 confirmed native human cases of brucellosis have been reported in Spain. In 2023, 22 cases (notification rate =0.05). These data show a downward trend in the number of annual cases and reporting rate in the early years, followed by stabilization since 2019.

Conclusions: Human brucellosis is currently in elimination phase in Spain; therefore, it is essential to intensify joint efforts to achieve its definitive eradication.
