Psychosocial and public risks among administrative employees in Colombian prisons

Introduction: This study analyzes psychosocial and public risk factors in Colombian penitentiary institutions, considering their impact on the mental health of administrative personnel and institutional security. Recent evidence and national regulations demand a comprehensive understanding of these risks within the framework of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SG-SST).
Method: A descriptive mixed-methods approach was used, applying the Psychological Job Analysis (APTP) and an instrument specifically designed to assess public risk. The sample included 300 administrative employees from 18 cities, distributed across 20 job positions. Structured interviews were conducted with incumbents and peers, using result triangulation and analysis by job role, location, and type of exposure.
Results: Sixty-one percent of participants exhibited medium, high, or very high levels of psychosocial risk. The most affected dimensions were emotional demands, mental workload, and role responsibility. Regarding public risk, 68% reported significant exposure to external insecurity, particularly in Bogotá, Popayán, and Ibagué. Job positions such as university professionals, administrative assistants, and instructors showed the highest levels of combined risk. Qualitative testimonies revealed perceptions of hostility, fear, and deterioration in self-care.
Conclusions: The joint assessment of psychosocial and public risks strengthens the design of targeted interventions within the SG-SST. It is recommended to implement epidemiological surveillance, mental health programs, and territorial strategies to protect staff in penitentiary settings. The integration of organizational and community dimensions is essential to mitigate emotional strain and promote institutional well-being
