Invasive meningococcal disease in Spain 2023

Introduction: Description of the epidemiological analysis of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Spain during 2023 and its comparison with previous years.
Methods: Descriptive epidemiological analysis of cases of IMD reported to the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE) in 2023 was conducted. The variables analysed were: sex, age group, date of onset of symptoms, reporting community or autonomous city, death, clinical manifestation and serogroup.
Results: In 2023, 265 cases of IMD (51.7% men) were reported with an incidence rate (IR) of 0.58. The highest incidence rates in 2023 were seen in children younger than 1 year old, followed by the 1- to 4-year-old age group. During this year, the typical seasonal pattern of this disease was recovered, with a higher number of cases of IMD in autumn and winter. The most frequent clinical manifestation was meningitis with 38.5% of the reported cases. The case fatality rate was slightly higher than that observed in the last 12 years (13.2). The serogroup of 12.9% of reported cases of IMD is unknown. Of the 231cases for which this information was recorded, 60% corresponded to infections with serogroup B.
Discussion: In 2023 there is an increase in IR compared to the years 2020-2022 without reaching pre-pandemic levels. Improved reporting of microbiological characterization and vaccination data is crucial for conducting surveillance for this disease and for evaluating the vaccination program.
