Working Conditions and Vocal Health of Student Teachers

Abstract

Introduction: Teaching is a high-risk profession for the development of voice disorders for student teachers.

Objective: To recognize the working conditions and the state of vocal health of student teachers before the exercise of their profession according to what is reported in the literature.

Method: An integrative review of the literature based on the five stages proposed by Crossetti has been made. For this review, a search was carried out in the following databases: Academic Search Ultimate, Virtual Health Library, Proquest, Pubmed, Sciencedirect, Scopus and Taylor & Francis. Original studies related to the working conditions and vocal health of student teachers in English and Portuguese were included.

Results: 22 records met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Most studies have considered self-report of working conditions and vocal health through questionnaires. Future teachers have a high prevalence of voice problems even before practicing their profession. The point prevalence (at the moment) ranges between 5.4% and 56% and the period prevalence (previous year) is between 36.9% and 56%.

Conclusions: It is necessary that more studies be carried out on student teachers involving a multidisciplinary team in order to plan and execute actions from safety and health at work to evaluate the voice subjectively and objectively, promote vocal health and prevent voice problems that may impact during the teaching career.
